Dirty Underwear Of Game Reviews
Just doing a bit of late night reading and came across a good find on Arts Technica. There's a great article which outlines the pitfalls of trying to run a review site. Specifically it talks about how subtle publishers use their influence to corrupt game reviews. There is even mention of reviewers being given crib notes about how to do their work.
This has always been a motivating factor of why i wake up everyday and give a real effort to making honest reviews. I buy my games out the store just like the rest of you. With PC games there's no option either you buy the games or you pirate them. You can't rent PC games, never mind the fact that most console games are pirated just as easily!
Most people are law abiding citizens and spend their hard earned cash for entertainment. When you look at the actual value it's a good bargain. You could spend double the price of a new release for a night at the movies or you could be entertained for a week or more with a good game.
Why should someone give a fluffy review of a crap game just so the rich get richer and are encouraged to keep feeding us garbage! I am issuing a challenge to the Internet. If ever you find some bogus review that inspires you to go buy a game you know for a fact is bad, speak up!
Don't be afraid to make your voice known if you make a big enough fuss you are likely to get your opinion heard. The internet is fond of collecting data and what better way to keep publishers in line than going on the record. A few searches in google is all it takes to have an impact!
